Which Ingredients Should You Watch Out For When Shopping For CBD Pet Oil?

As pet owners, we want nothing more than to give our furry friends the absolute highest quality products possible to ensure that they’re consuming formulas that are essentially good for their bodies. CBD oil, being a holistic, natural product, is an easy go-to if we believe that our canine or feline will benefit from a daily dose of cannabinoids. But, you might be surprised by how many CBD pet oils out there contain ingredients that just aren’t good for our pets, even if the cannabidiol (CBD) itself is fine.

Luckily, CBD pet oils are required to list their ingredients on the label, in order for pet owners to know for certain that they’re giving their precious companion only the best-of- the-best.

What are Some Must-Avoid Ingredients?
Now, there are certain ingredients that should be avoided at all costs? How come? Well, because they’re making no contribution in terms of the product’s quality or effectiveness, and worse, because they can be harmful to your pet’s health.

#1: Artificial Preservatives
The bottom line is that a CBD pet oil shouldn’t contain preservatives, because it’s just not necessary. The exception is citric acid, which is natural, and would preserve the flavoring, as cannabidiol extract can last for 2 years without any preservatives needed. Besides that, you absolutely want to avoid CBD oils that contain specific preservatives that are known to cause harm to an animal’s body, including nitrites, sulfites, and benzoates, all of which may be carcinogenic, in addition to doing damage to a pet’s endocrine and nervous systems after prolonged use.

#2: Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)
If a CBD product is marketed for pets, the chance of it containing an additional tetrahydrocannabinol extract is phenomenally rare. But, it’s so important that THC is never administered to a cat or dog, that we’re putting it here regardless. Their bodies cannot handle any form of THC, including delta 8, delta 9, delta 10, THC-O, THC-P, THCV, etc. While these cannabinoids are in a lot of products for humans, they can be toxic to a pet, and can lead to major health complications including death due to neurotoxicity. Before giving a pet any tincture then, make sure there is no THC in the formula.

#3: Essential Oils
A lot of products that we consume contain essential oils, like peppermint oil, oregano oil, tea tree oil, lavender oil, and so on. You may think that because these oils are natural, that they’re also safe for pets. But, that’s far from true. Essential oils contain concentrations of certain compounds that a pet’s body cannot process, because their kidneys and liver are not made like ours. Ingesting even trace amounts of essential oils can kill a pet, so strictly avoid them completely. Even applying an essential oil to your pet’s skin, or diffusing it in an enclosed space, can lead to seizures and other potentially life-threatening problems.

#4: Artificial Flavors
Flavored CBD pet oils are fine, if your pet is finicky and would be more likely to take a daily dose of hemp if it tasted like chicken, bacon, fish, or whatever appeals to their taste buds. Overall, still, you should avoid any CBD oil that uses artificial flavors to achieve its taste. Artificial flavors, often labeled simply as “flavoring” on a list of ingredients, can come from pretty much any source, and companies don’t need to disclose what chemicals they use to derive the flavor. Basically, this means that you have no real way of knowing what you’re putting into your pet’s body with each serving.

#5: Cheap Fillers
Unfortunately, there are companies out there that are more concerned with saving money than they are crafting quality products, and so they cut corners in numerous ways. One way is by loading their CBD oils up with cheap filler ingredients that don’t actually add to the quality of the product whatsoever, and even dilute the “clean” ingredients that are beneficial to your dog. There are countless fillers that companies can use, including glycols, glycerin derivatives and so on. A tincture intended for pets should contain, at most, three types of ingredients:

  • Hemp extract itself
  • Plant-derived carrier oil(s)
  • Flavoring/active ingredients that benefit your pet’s body.

If a CBD pet oil has a long list of ingredients, that’s never a good sign.

#6: Pet Allergens
Finally, look carefully to make sure that a CBD oil does not contain any ingredients that your pet is allergic to. For instance, certain carrier oils can be allergens to specific dogs, so make sure that you know what it is that you’re putting into your pet’s body before potentially causing an allergic reaction.

Always Give Your Pet Clean and Safe CBD Oil
Naturally, no pet owner wants to give their cat and/or dog a daily dose of toxic preservatives or known allergens in the name of maintaining a hemp routine. Again, as we cannot stress this enough, before buying any CBD oil for your pet, and even before that speaking with your veterinarian initially, look at the ingredients carefully, and also make sure that each one is agreeable with their body.
